Global desertification problem is pressing. Persistent degradation of dryland ecosystems caused by human activities, including unsustainable farming, mining, overgrazing and clear-cutting of land, and by climate change. This Competition is to enhance Hong Kong university students and postgraduates’ understanding on global environmental issues and current status of desertification control. Students are encouraged to plan a sustainable and innovative desertification control business proposal.
Ideas from winning entries could be applied to deserts and it is a chance to discover entrepreneurial opportunities.

Eligibilities

  1. Full-time university students and postgraduate students of universities and post-secondary colleges (including UGC-funded universities, self-financing institutions, post-secondary institutions, private universities, etc.) in Hong Kong
  2. Each team shall comprise of 2 to 4 members
  3. Members can come from different institutions and majors
  4. Each student can only participate in one team

Assessment Guidelines

Environmental Friendliness

  • Desertification control measures and works need to be operated in a way that not harm to environment, aim at minimizing the environmental impacts, including short, medium and long-term

Sustainability

  • Reduce overall pollution and waste while pursuing economic prosperity and improving living condition
  • Provide self-sufficient living to residents
  • Considering impacts to economic, social and environmental, including current and future aspect

Innovation and Creativity

  • Original Idea

Effectiveness and Feasibility

  • Sound and profitable financial plan
  • Business ideas elaborated with details
  • Ideas applicable to different deserts

1st proposal has been shortlisted and finalist teams were informed by the Secretariat in May. Finalist teams are entitled to have a field trip to Kubuqi Desert from 28 to 31 May. After the field trip, the teams need to enrich the proposal based on the investigation at the desert and submit the final business plan and presentation document on or before 1 August. Proposal submission deadline: before 24:00 1 August (Thursday) (according to the Secretariat’s server time).
